April Tenant of the Month

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

This month’s Tenant of the Month is….

Shimmering Sands Middle Eastern Dance

What we do:

The Shimmering Sands Dance Company explores the mystery and intrigue of the timeless and captivating art of belly dance.

We mainly focus on what is known as Modern Egyptian cabaret style of belly dance. We also learn and explore a variety of Middle Eastern dancing styles as well as their musical and cultural context.

We perform at a variety of shows, venues, and events throughout Logan and Salt Lake City. These include:

  • Sandstorm – One of Shimmering Sands’ largest productions which showcases dancers from all over Utah who perform all different styles of belly dance. Join us Friday, May 18 at 7:30 in the USU TSC auditorium.
  • Indian Oven Dance Night – Last Saturday of the month at 8:00 pm at the Indian Oven (April 28 & May 26)
  • Annual Belly Dance Spring Fest – Largest belly dance festival in Utah

When we do it:

We offer beginning to advanced level classes as well as a performance troupe for students at the intermediate level and above. For more information, check out the Whittier schedule page, www.shimmeringsandsbellydance.com, or call 615-306-2654.

Come and join the fun and learn how to shimmy at our beginning ‘Basics of belly dance” class on Tuesdays at 7:00. There are no pre-requisites and the class is open to all.  Classes are $75 for an 8-week session or drop-in and try it for $15 a class. Next session starts May 1st.

History with Whittier:

Shimmering Sands moved to the Whittier Community Center in the fall of 2006. We have enjoyed every minute of it since! We love the large class rooms, our fellow tenants, and the beauty of the historic building.

Northern Utah Women’s Council of Realtors

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

I would like to thank the Northern Utah Women’s Council of Realtor’s for their support of the Whittier Center. The gave a substantial donation that helped us pull off a great Halloween Festival. Like the Whittier Center, the NUWCoR helps out many different groups in our community.

Thank you.

I’m sick…and the banner

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

For those of you wondering I am sick and will not be in the office until Thursday. The cold weather got me. I hope you guys are doing well now that winter (that’s winner if you are from Utah*) has arrived in  Cache Valley. Despite the cold we are still having events at the Whittier every night. Last night I had to come in for an emergency and there was a huge crowd for the Salsa Dancing (done every Tuesday by Free Style Dance) and a large belly dance troupe upstairs (classes run by Shimmering Sands Middle Eastern Dance). So despite the flu and the cold the Whittier is still rocking.

I noted in an earlier blog post that I’d like to change the Banner seasonally. Right now it is showing Logan Canyon with a splash of fall colors. Should it stay or should it change to the snow background?

* Ever notice how the northern Utah dialect drops the T from words. Winner instead of WinTer, Mounain instead of MounTain, Manawey instead of Man too ua (Mantua**). Check it out on your friends!

** yes yes I know that the town is named after the birthplace of Eliza and Lorenzo Snow in Ohio and not the town in Italy. I also know that Mantua (UT/OH) is named after a Shawnee chief and is pronounced different but the historian in me shudders every time it is pronounced the Shawnee and not the Italian way.

New website

Thursday, October 27th, 2011

The new website is up and it looks great. I would like to give a shout out to Scott Kimber for helping me create a more accessible format. It helps that he made it Luddite  accessible for me.

This new website will allow me to add pictures, blogposts, videos and more. I will also be publishing weekly posts about things going on here or news from the Valley. I am also encouraging our tenants to send me news and events that I can publish here.
